2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | welcome the delegation from the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of |
---|
4 | 4 | | Commerce to the Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The community of La Porte was founded in 1892 and |
---|
6 | 6 | | is the oldest incorporated town in eastern Harris County; it soon |
---|
7 | 7 | | became one of the premier tourist destinations in the region, as |
---|
8 | 8 | | the public waterfront space known as Sylvan Grove began offering |
---|
9 | 9 | | such amenities as bathhouses, boating piers, cottage retreats, |
---|
10 | 10 | | and a Victorian hotel with a dance pavilion; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, the city continued to grow and |
---|
12 | 12 | | prosper and overcame a fire and two hurricanes to become stronger |
---|
13 | 13 | | and more unified; World War II brought shipyards and |
---|
14 | 14 | | manufacturing activity to the region, and later the arrival of |
---|
15 | 15 | | the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the |
---|
16 | 16 | | Bayport Channel to the area transformed the local economy and |
---|
17 | 17 | | helped La Porte establish itself as an outstanding community for |
---|
18 | 18 | | industry; the opening of the La Porte-Baytown tunnel in 1954 |
---|
19 | 19 | | spurred further development; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, ocean-going ships make their way up the |
---|
21 | 21 | | Houston Ship Channel, passing both a vibrant industrial sector |
---|
22 | 22 | | and the famed San Jacinto Battleground and Monument, where the |
---|
23 | 23 | | battle that won Texas' independence was fought; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The La Porte-Bayshore area offers award-winning |
---|
25 | 25 | | schools, expansive parklands, and convenient access to the |
---|
26 | 26 | | amenities of Houston and the Houston Ship Channel; it is truly |
---|
27 | 27 | | fitting that this exemplary community receive recognition for |
---|
28 | 28 | | the important role it has played in our state's success; now, |
---|
29 | 29 | | therefore, be it |
---|
30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby commend the people of the La Porte-Bayshore |
---|
32 | 32 | | community on their many contributions to our state's growth and |
---|
33 | 33 | | prosperity and extend to the delegation from the La |
---|
34 | 34 | | Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce best wishes for a productive |
---|
35 | 35 | | visit to the Capitol; and, be it further |

36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
