                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 318
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 welcome the delegation from the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of
 Commerce to the Capitol; and
 WHEREAS, The community of La Porte was founded in 1892 and
 is the oldest incorporated town in eastern Harris County; it soon
 became one of the premier tourist destinations in the region, as
 the public waterfront space known as Sylvan Grove began offering
 such amenities as bathhouses, boating piers, cottage retreats,
 and a Victorian hotel with a dance pavilion; and
 WHEREAS, Through the years, the city continued to grow and
 prosper and overcame a fire and two hurricanes to become stronger
 and more unified; World War II brought shipyards and
 manufacturing activity to the region, and later the arrival of
 the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the
 Bayport Channel to the area transformed the local economy and
 helped La Porte establish itself as an outstanding community for
 industry; the opening of the La Porte-Baytown tunnel in 1954
 spurred further development; and
 WHEREAS, Today, ocean-going ships make their way up the
 Houston Ship Channel, passing both a vibrant industrial sector
 and the famed San Jacinto Battleground and Monument, where the
 battle that won Texas' independence was fought; and
 WHEREAS, The La Porte-Bayshore area offers award-winning
 schools, expansive parklands, and convenient access to the
 amenities of Houston and the Houston Ship Channel; it is truly
 fitting that this exemplary community receive recognition for
 the important role it has played in our state's success; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
 Legislature, hereby commend the people of the La Porte-Bayshore
 community on their many contributions to our state's growth and
 prosperity and extend to the delegation from the La
 Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce best wishes for a productive
 visit to the Capitol; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 the chamber as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
