SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 473 WHEREAS, A 70th wedding anniversary marks a lifetime of mutual devotion and shared experiences, and Roy and Lillian Burley of San Antonio are celebrating this joyous milestone in their marriage on March 26, 2015; and WHEREAS, Roy W. Burley and the former Lillian Snow met at Prairie View A&M University, and they were joined in matrimony at Houston City Hall in 1945, just before Mr. Burley shipped out to serve in the United States Army during World War II; through the years, they have been blessed with four children, Roy W. Burley Jr., Ronald Burley, Nan Burley Richie, and the late Joan Burley O'Neal, and with the passing years, their family has grown to include six grandchildren, Ron Blair Burley, Crystal Burley, Juliet Burley, Michelle O'Neal, Leon O'Neal, and Ana Elizabeth Richie, and three great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Roy W. Burley was a member of Howard University's prestigious 2515th Army Service Unit, known as "the Prometheans," during World War II, and he went on to serve in Korea and as a company commander in Vietnam; he was also stationed in the Philippines, Germany, and Thailand and at many bases across the United States; he retired from the military with the rank of colonel and went on to serve as director of personnel for the USAA Insurance Company, as director of the Bexar County Opportunity Industrial Centers, and as chief of staff for State Representatives Lou Nelle Sutton and G. J. Sutton; he has also worked as a political consultant; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Burley studied dance at Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York City, and in addition to raising her family, she has worked outside the home as a classroom teacher and as a ballroom dance instructor; she and her husband are both longtime members of Saint Paul United Methodist Church in San Antonio; and WHEREAS, Colonel and Mrs. Burley have enjoyed seven decades of abiding love and affection for each other, and they are among an exceptional group of men and women who can claim such a lasting commitment; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby congratulate Roy and Lillian Burley on their 70th wedding anniversary and extend to them best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That the a copy of this Resolution be prepared for them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
