                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 536
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize David Mitzner on the occasion of his 100th birthday; and
 WHEREAS, David Mitzner was born April 11, 1915, into a
 Jewish family in Warsaw; he grew up in the newly independent
 Poland, but when German and Soviet armies invaded in 1939 at the
 onset of World War II, he was cut off from his family; and
 WHEREAS, Undaunted by events, he established a
 cross-border business operation to provide for his family in
 Warsaw; during the course of the war, his mother and sister were
 killed in the Holocaust, and he was imprisoned for eight years in
 the Soviet Gulag, where his brother and father were killed; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Mitzner fled Communist-controlled Eastern
 Europe in 1949 and arrived in New York with only $17 in his
 pocket; through perseverance and hard work, he rebuilt his family
 in the United States and became a successful textile
 manufacturer; and
 WHEREAS, He moved to Houston in 1980 and founded RIDA
 Development Corporation, a commercial real estate firm that has
 helped to create thousands of jobs through the development of
 numerous office buildings, shopping centers, and major
 convention hotels; he has been featured on the front page of the
 Wall Street Journal and is the recipient of the Polish Medal of
 Honor; and
 WHEREAS, David Mitzner has lived through extraordinary
 times and experienced events that most people only know through
 history books, and his courage in the face of great hardship and
 adversity exemplifies the indomitability of the human spirit;
 now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
 Legislature, hereby commend David Mitzner on his many
 achievements and extend to him best wishes for a joyous 100th
 birthday celebration; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
