| 4 | 4 | | Young Men on the occasion of the groundbreaking ceremony for the |

| 5 | 5 | | construction of its new school facility on April 16, 2015; and |

| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Young Men is a magnet school in the Houston Independent School |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | District serving grades six through 12; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The mission of the academy is to develop the full |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | potential of every student by fostering an educational environment |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | that encourages critical thinking, inspires student confidence, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and nurtures the intellectual and social development of students, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | enabling them to graduate from college and become successful |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | leaders in the global community; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Modeled after single-gender private schools, but |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | with a public school fee, the academy specializes in science, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | technology, engineering, and mathematics curricula, while offering |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | a wide range of advanced placement classes in such disciplines as |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | United States and world history, government, English literature, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | and Spanish; students participate in an array of extracurricular |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | activities, including academic competitions, robotics, and jazz |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | band; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Young Men has had a profound impact on the lives of its students |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | and their families, and it is truly fitting that the school |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | receive special recognition as it expands to meet the needs of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | the future; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |

| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, and staff of |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men on |

| 31 | 31 | | their commitment to excellence in education and extend to all best |
