11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 568
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for
44 Young Men on the occasion of the groundbreaking ceremony for the
55 construction of its new school facility on April 16, 2015; and
66 WHEREAS, The Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for
77 Young Men is a magnet school in the Houston Independent School
88 District serving grades six through 12; and
99 WHEREAS, The mission of the academy is to develop the full
1010 potential of every student by fostering an educational environment
1111 that encourages critical thinking, inspires student confidence,
1212 and nurtures the intellectual and social development of students,
1313 enabling them to graduate from college and become successful
1414 leaders in the global community; and
1515 WHEREAS, Modeled after single-gender private schools, but
1616 with a public school fee, the academy specializes in science,
1717 technology, engineering, and mathematics curricula, while offering
1818 a wide range of advanced placement classes in such disciplines as
1919 United States and world history, government, English literature,
2020 and Spanish; students participate in an array of extracurricular
2121 activities, including academic competitions, robotics, and jazz
2222 band; and
2323 WHEREAS, The Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for
2424 Young Men has had a profound impact on the lives of its students
2525 and their families, and it is truly fitting that the school
2626 receive special recognition as it expands to meet the needs of
2727 the future; now, therefore, be it
2828 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
2929 Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, and staff of
3030 the Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men on
3131 their commitment to excellence in education and extend to all best
3232 wishes for a memorable groundbreaking ceremony; and, be it further
3333 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3434 the academy as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
