                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 568
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize the Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for
 Young Men on the occasion of the groundbreaking ceremony for the
 construction of its new school facility on April 16, 2015; and
 WHEREAS, The Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for
 Young Men is a magnet school in the Houston Independent School
 District serving grades six through 12; and
 WHEREAS, The mission of the academy is to develop the full
 potential of every student by fostering an educational environment
 that encourages critical thinking, inspires student confidence,
 and nurtures the intellectual and social development of students,
 enabling them to graduate from college and become successful
 leaders in the global community; and
 WHEREAS, Modeled after single-gender private schools, but
 with a public school fee, the academy specializes in science,
 technology, engineering, and mathematics curricula, while offering
 a wide range of advanced placement classes in such disciplines as
 United States and world history, government, English literature,
 and Spanish; students participate in an array of extracurricular
 activities, including academic competitions, robotics, and jazz
 band; and
 WHEREAS, The Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for
 Young Men has had a profound impact on the lives of its students
 and their families, and it is truly fitting that the school
 receive special recognition as it expands to meet the needs of
 the future; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
 Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, and staff of
 the Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men on
 their commitment to excellence in education and extend to all best
 wishes for a memorable groundbreaking ceremony; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 the academy as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
