SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 58
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Dr. W. David Watts, who has been named the recipient of
the 2014 Citizen of the Year Award by the Odessa Chamber of
Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Watts is president of The University of Texas
of the Permian Basin; a native Texan and graduate of The
University of Texas at Austin, he earned a master's degree and a
doctoral degree in sociology from the State University of New
York in Buffalo; and
WHEREAS, He became president of The University of Texas of
the Permian Basin in 2001 after having served as vice president
for academic and student affairs at Jacksonville State University
in Alabama; his prior experience also included serving as a
department chair and faculty member at Southwest Texas State
University and as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at
Southeastern Louisiana University; and
WHEREAS, His extensive research and publications on
sociological issues related to drug and alcohol abuse prevention
and treatment have had a profound impact on the lives of many; his
work supporting educational issues has included service on
numerous statewide task forces and committees; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Watts has had a significant impact on his
community and his profession, and it is truly fitting that he
receive special recognition for his outstanding achievements;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
Legislature, hereby commend Dr. W. David Watts on his many
contributions to The University of Texas of the Permian Basin and
the citizens of this state and extend congratulations to him on
receiving the 2014 Citizen of the Year Award from the Odessa
Chamber of Commerce; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
