2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Catherine Hejl is retiring as Bryan District engineer |

3 | 3 | | for the Texas Department of Transportation on January 31, 2015, |

4 | 4 | | concluding an exemplary career that has spanned 30 years with the |

5 | 5 | | agency; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, One of the highest-ranking female engineers at |
---|
7 | 7 | | TxDOT, Ms. Hejl oversees nearly 300 employees and directs |
---|
8 | 8 | | projects totaling more than $400 million; she has proven an |
---|
9 | 9 | | exceptionally talented manager, building a strong team and |
---|
10 | 10 | | challenging and motivating her personnel to achieve superior |
---|
11 | 11 | | results; under her leadership, the Bryan District has received |
---|
12 | 12 | | numerous awards from national and state organizations, including |
---|
13 | 13 | | the Cement Council of Texas Highways division, the National |
---|
14 | 14 | | Asphalt Pavement Association, the Texas Asphalt Pavement |
---|
15 | 15 | | Association, and the Associated General Contractors; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 2005, as Hurricane Rita approached the Texas |
---|
17 | 17 | | coast, Ms. Hejl guided the contraflow of 113 miles of Interstate |
---|
18 | 18 | | 45 through Walker, Madison, Leon, and Freestone Counties; she |
---|
19 | 19 | | worked with employees across her district and the two neighboring |
---|
20 | 20 | | districts to successfully complete the contraflow from Houston |
---|
21 | 21 | | to Dallas, and by ensuring a smoother evacuation process, she |
---|
22 | 22 | | helped save countless lives; among the accolades she has received |
---|
23 | 23 | | are the 2014 Outstanding Women in Texas Government Award, the |
---|
24 | 24 | | 2007 TxDOT Dewitt C. Greer Award, and the Greater Brazos Valley |
---|
25 | 25 | | Excellence in Transportation Award; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, This dynamic Texan earned her bachelor's degree in |
---|
27 | 27 | | civil engineering from Texas A&M University, and in 1985, she |
---|
28 | 28 | | joined TxDOT as an engineer assistant in the Walker County Area |
---|
29 | 29 | | Office of the Bryan District; through her skill and unyielding |
---|
30 | 30 | | commitment to excellence, she rose steadily through the ranks in |
---|
31 | 31 | | the district, serving as assistant area engineer, Bryan District |
---|
32 | 32 | | maintenance engineer, and Bryan Area engineer before becoming |
---|
33 | 33 | | Bryan District director of operations in 2004; she was appointed |
---|
34 | 34 | | to the top post in the district five years later; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, An outstanding engineer and administrator, |
---|
36 | 36 | | Catherine Hejl has earned the deep respect and admiration of her |
---|
37 | 37 | | colleagues, and her contributions will continue to benefit the |
---|
38 | 38 | | State of Texas in the years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate Catherine W. Hejl on her |
---|
41 | 41 | | retirement as Bryan District engineer for the Texas Department of |
---|
42 | 42 | | Transportation and extend to her sincere best wishes as she embarks |
---|
43 | 43 | | on the next exciting chapter of her life; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
