11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 60
22 WHEREAS, Catherine Hejl is retiring as Bryan District engineer
33 for the Texas Department of Transportation on January 31, 2015,
44 concluding an exemplary career that has spanned 30 years with the
55 agency; and
66 WHEREAS, One of the highest-ranking female engineers at
77 TxDOT, Ms. Hejl oversees nearly 300 employees and directs
88 projects totaling more than $400 million; she has proven an
99 exceptionally talented manager, building a strong team and
1010 challenging and motivating her personnel to achieve superior
1111 results; under her leadership, the Bryan District has received
1212 numerous awards from national and state organizations, including
1313 the Cement Council of Texas Highways division, the National
1414 Asphalt Pavement Association, the Texas Asphalt Pavement
1515 Association, and the Associated General Contractors; and
1616 WHEREAS, In 2005, as Hurricane Rita approached the Texas
1717 coast, Ms. Hejl guided the contraflow of 113 miles of Interstate
1818 45 through Walker, Madison, Leon, and Freestone Counties; she
1919 worked with employees across her district and the two neighboring
2020 districts to successfully complete the contraflow from Houston
2121 to Dallas, and by ensuring a smoother evacuation process, she
2222 helped save countless lives; among the accolades she has received
2323 are the 2014 Outstanding Women in Texas Government Award, the
2424 2007 TxDOT Dewitt C. Greer Award, and the Greater Brazos Valley
2525 Excellence in Transportation Award; and
2626 WHEREAS, This dynamic Texan earned her bachelor's degree in
2727 civil engineering from Texas A&M University, and in 1985, she
2828 joined TxDOT as an engineer assistant in the Walker County Area
2929 Office of the Bryan District; through her skill and unyielding
3030 commitment to excellence, she rose steadily through the ranks in
3131 the district, serving as assistant area engineer, Bryan District
3232 maintenance engineer, and Bryan Area engineer before becoming
3333 Bryan District director of operations in 2004; she was appointed
3434 to the top post in the district five years later; and
3535 WHEREAS, An outstanding engineer and administrator,
3636 Catherine Hejl has earned the deep respect and admiration of her
3737 colleagues, and her contributions will continue to benefit the
3838 State of Texas in the years to come; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4040 Legislature, hereby congratulate Catherine W. Hejl on her
4141 retirement as Bryan District engineer for the Texas Department of
4242 Transportation and extend to her sincere best wishes as she embarks
4343 on the next exciting chapter of her life; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4545 prepared for Ms. Hejl as an expression of high regard from the
4646 Texas Senate.
