SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 60 WHEREAS, Catherine Hejl is retiring as Bryan District engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation on January 31, 2015, concluding an exemplary career that has spanned 30 years with the agency; and WHEREAS, One of the highest-ranking female engineers at TxDOT, Ms. Hejl oversees nearly 300 employees and directs projects totaling more than $400 million; she has proven an exceptionally talented manager, building a strong team and challenging and motivating her personnel to achieve superior results; under her leadership, the Bryan District has received numerous awards from national and state organizations, including the Cement Council of Texas Highways division, the National Asphalt Pavement Association, the Texas Asphalt Pavement Association, and the Associated General Contractors; and WHEREAS, In 2005, as Hurricane Rita approached the Texas coast, Ms. Hejl guided the contraflow of 113 miles of Interstate 45 through Walker, Madison, Leon, and Freestone Counties; she worked with employees across her district and the two neighboring districts to successfully complete the contraflow from Houston to Dallas, and by ensuring a smoother evacuation process, she helped save countless lives; among the accolades she has received are the 2014 Outstanding Women in Texas Government Award, the 2007 TxDOT Dewitt C. Greer Award, and the Greater Brazos Valley Excellence in Transportation Award; and WHEREAS, This dynamic Texan earned her bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University, and in 1985, she joined TxDOT as an engineer assistant in the Walker County Area Office of the Bryan District; through her skill and unyielding commitment to excellence, she rose steadily through the ranks in the district, serving as assistant area engineer, Bryan District maintenance engineer, and Bryan Area engineer before becoming Bryan District director of operations in 2004; she was appointed to the top post in the district five years later; and WHEREAS, An outstanding engineer and administrator, Catherine Hejl has earned the deep respect and admiration of her colleagues, and her contributions will continue to benefit the State of Texas in the years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby congratulate Catherine W. Hejl on her retirement as Bryan District engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation and extend to her sincere best wishes as she embarks on the next exciting chapter of her life; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared for Ms. Hejl as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
