SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 647 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Sergeant Major Alyssa Marie Michalke, who is assuming formal command of the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets on May 9, 2015; and WHEREAS, This pioneering cadet is the first woman in the Corps of Cadets to attain the rank of sergeant major, the highest rank for any cadet who is not a senior, and she will assume her new post as the first female corps commander in the school's 139-year history; and WHEREAS, During her three years with the corps, Sergeant Major Michalke has demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities and a selfless work ethic; she has been chosen to guide more than 2,400 unit members, the largest Texas A&M Corps in 45 years; and WHEREAS, She has been recognized as a Distinguished Student at the university, where she serves in numerous corps and volunteer organizations; she is also a member of several academic societies, including the National Honor Society for Chemical Engineering and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers; and WHEREAS, Sergeant Major Michalke is an exemplary young woman who is respected and admired by her peers, and she is indeed deserving of recognition for her outstanding achievements; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby commend Sergeant Major Alyssa Marie Michalke on her exceptional accomplishments and congratulate her on her selection as the first woman to serve as commander of the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
