| 3 | 3 | | welcome Michael K. Young to Texas and extend congratulations to |

| 4 | 4 | | him on assuming the prestigious position of president of Texas |

| 5 | 5 | | A&M University; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Michael Young brings to the position of president |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | more than three decades of teaching, research, public service, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | and leadership in higher education; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, He most recently served as president of the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | University of Washington, and formerly served as president and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | distinguished professor of law at the University of Utah, as dean |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | of the George Washington University Law School, and as director |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | for Japanese legal studies and law professor at Columbia |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | University; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, President Young is an internationally recognized |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | legal scholar who graduated summa cum laude from Brigham Young |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | University, and received a law degree from Harvard Law School, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | where he served on the Harvard Law Review and graduated magna cum |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | laude; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, President Young is committed to public service; |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | he has served as a law clerk to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | of the United States Supreme Court, has chaired the United States |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Commission on International Religious Freedom, and has pursued |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | agreements for the United States as deputy legal advisor, deputy |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | undersecretary and ambassador for trade and environmental affairs |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | in the United States Department of State; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, As head of Texas A&M University, President Young |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | now leads a student body and faculty who have the greatest respect |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | for his expertise and administrative talent and who look forward |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | to joining him in his efforts to shape the university's future |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and in his quest for solutions to the challenges ahead; now, |

| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |

| 34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere congratulations to President |
