                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 720
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 welcome Michael K. Young to Texas and extend congratulations to
 him on assuming the prestigious position of president of Texas
 A&M University; and
 WHEREAS, Michael Young brings to the position of president
 more than three decades of teaching, research, public service,
 and leadership in higher education; and
 WHEREAS, He most recently served as president of the
 University of Washington, and formerly served as president and
 distinguished professor of law at the University of Utah, as dean
 of the George Washington University Law School, and as director
 for Japanese legal studies and law professor at Columbia
 University; and
 WHEREAS, President Young is an internationally recognized
 legal scholar who graduated summa cum laude from Brigham Young
 University, and received a law degree from Harvard Law School,
 where he served on the Harvard Law Review and graduated magna cum
 laude; and
 WHEREAS, President Young is committed to public service;
 he has served as a law clerk to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist
 of the United States Supreme Court, has chaired the United States
 Commission on International Religious Freedom, and has pursued
 agreements for the United States as deputy legal advisor, deputy
 undersecretary and ambassador for trade and environmental affairs
 in the United States Department of State; and
 WHEREAS, As head of Texas A&M University, President Young
 now leads a student body and faculty who have the greatest respect
 for his expertise and administrative talent and who look forward
 to joining him in his efforts to shape the university's future
 and in his quest for solutions to the challenges ahead; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
 Legislature, hereby extend sincere congratulations to President
 Michael K. Young and best wishes to his wife, Marti, as he assumes
 the position of 25th president of Texas A&M University; and, be
 it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
 honor of this special occasion.
