55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
66 of Austin in mourning the loss of Florence Keyes Olsen, who died
77 October 16, 2013, at the age of 99; and
88 WHEREAS, An Austin native, Florence Keyes was born on
99 September 16, 1914; she grew up in the Clarksville area, and she
1010 graduated from Austin High School in 1931 and attended a business
1111 college; and
1212 WHEREAS, She eloped with Homer Olsen, a young newspaperman,
1313 in 1936, and his work took them to Dallas and Wichita Falls before
1414 they returned to her beloved hometown in 1949; they shared 60
1515 years of marriage and were blessed with three children; she
1616 became the proud matriarch of the family and was known as
1717 "Nannie" to her 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and
1818 one great-great-grandchild; Mr. Olsen was the well-known city
1919 editor of the Austin American-Statesman; and
2020 WHEREAS, Mrs. Olsen had a 40-year career at the Texas
2121 Capitol, where she was employed by Senator Charles Herring and
2222 later served as a receptionist outside of the Senate chamber; the
2323 Senate honored her as a "Texas Treasure" in celebration of her
2424 90th birthday; and
2525 WHEREAS, She was an active member of the community, and after
2626 her retirement, she dedicated much of her time to volunteering as
2727 a member of the Auxiliary at Saint David's Hospital; in her
2828 latest years, she lived at the Renaissance and served as head of
2929 the Hospitality Committee; and
3030 WHEREAS, Mrs. Olsen had a long and wonderful life and left her
3131 family with countless precious memories; she was beloved by many,
3232 and she will long be remembered with respect and affection by all
3333 who were privileged to share in her life; now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3535 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3636 family of Florence Keyes Olsen; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3838 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3939 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4040 memory of Florence Olsen.
