5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens |
---|
6 | 6 | | of Austin in mourning the loss of Florence Keyes Olsen, who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | October 16, 2013, at the age of 99; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, An Austin native, Florence Keyes was born on |
---|
9 | 9 | | September 16, 1914; she grew up in the Clarksville area, and she |
---|
10 | 10 | | graduated from Austin High School in 1931 and attended a business |
---|
11 | 11 | | college; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, She eloped with Homer Olsen, a young newspaperman, |
---|
13 | 13 | | in 1936, and his work took them to Dallas and Wichita Falls before |
---|
14 | 14 | | they returned to her beloved hometown in 1949; they shared 60 |
---|
15 | 15 | | years of marriage and were blessed with three children; she |
---|
16 | 16 | | became the proud matriarch of the family and was known as |
---|
17 | 17 | | "Nannie" to her 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and |
---|
18 | 18 | | one great-great-grandchild; Mr. Olsen was the well-known city |
---|
19 | 19 | | editor of the Austin American-Statesman; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Olsen had a 40-year career at the Texas |
---|
21 | 21 | | Capitol, where she was employed by Senator Charles Herring and |
---|
22 | 22 | | later served as a receptionist outside of the Senate chamber; the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Senate honored her as a "Texas Treasure" in celebration of her |
---|
24 | 24 | | 90th birthday; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, She was an active member of the community, and after |
---|
26 | 26 | | her retirement, she dedicated much of her time to volunteering as |
---|
27 | 27 | | a member of the Auxiliary at Saint David's Hospital; in her |
---|
28 | 28 | | latest years, she lived at the Renaissance and served as head of |
---|
29 | 29 | | the Hospitality Committee; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Olsen had a long and wonderful life and left her |
---|
31 | 31 | | family with countless precious memories; she was beloved by many, |
---|
32 | 32 | | and she will long be remembered with respect and affection by all |
---|
33 | 33 | | who were privileged to share in her life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
36 | 36 | | family of Florence Keyes Olsen; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
38 | 38 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
40 | 40 | | memory of Florence Olsen. |
