11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 749
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Mary Altman Yturria on the grand occasion of her 90th
44 birthday; and
55 WHEREAS, Mary Yturria was born on May 9, 1925, in York,
66 Alabama; she graduated from the Sophie Wright School for Girls in
77 New Orleans and attended Louisiana State University before
88 joining Pan Am Airlines in 1944 to aid in the war effort; and
99 WHEREAS, She moved to Brownsville, where she met and
1010 married local rancher and banker Frank D. Yturria; on her
1111 birthday, which is also their anniversary, they will have enjoyed
1212 68 years of marriage together; they have been blessed with two
1313 daughters and three grandchildren who are a source of much pride
1414 and joy; and
1515 WHEREAS, Through the years, Mrs. Yturria has devoted her
1616 time and energy to supporting and promoting a wide range of
1717 philanthropic and charitable causes, most notably in the fields
1818 of conservation and historic preservation; she is the founder of
1919 the Historic Brownsville Museum and a founding board member of
2020 Los Caminos del Rio; she was a founding member of the Gulf of
2121 Mexico Foundation and has served on the board of the Texas
2222 Audubon Society; and
2323 WHEREAS, Mrs. Yturria has founded, served on, or chaired
2424 many other boards and committees, and she has received numerous
2525 honors, including the Ruth Lester Lifetime Achievement Award
2626 from the Texas Historical Commission and the Texas State Teachers
2727 Association'sHumanitarianAward;theMaryandFrankYturria
2828 Elementary School was named in honor of her and her husband, and
2929 July 4 of each year has been designated Mary Yturria Day in
3030 Brownsville; and
3131 WHEREAS, A beloved and respected member of her community,
3232 Mrs. Yturria is noted for her warmth, her wit, and her wise
3333 counsel, and she inspires those around her by her enthusiasm for
3434 living each day to the fullest; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3636 Legislature, hereby commend Mary Altman Yturria on her
3737 invaluable contributions to her community and extend best wishes
3838 to her on the occasion of her 90th birthday; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4040 her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
