55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of noted chemist and researcher Lester J.
77 Reed, who died January 14, 2015, at the age of 90; and
88 WHEREAS, Lester Reed was born on January 3, 1925, in New
99 Orleans, Louisiana; he was drawn to a life in science at an early
1010 age after his sister gave him a chemistry set, and he went on to
1111 earn a bachelor's degree from Tulane University and a doctoral
1212 degree in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois at
1313 Urbana-Champaign; and
1414 WHEREAS, He met Janet Gruschow while pursuing postdoctoral
1515 studies at the Cornell University Medical School, and they
1616 married on August 7, 1948; they raised four children together and
1717 were blessed with two grandchildren; and
1818 WHEREAS, Dr. Reed joined the chemistry faculty at The
1919 University of Texas at Austin in 1948; over the course of his
2020 distinguished 53-year career at the university, he served as a
2121 mentor to countless scientists and scholars around the world, and
2222 in 1984, he was named the Ashbel Smith Professor; and
2323 WHEREAS, His groundbreaking work and publications on the
2424 first isolation of lipoic acid had a profound impact on the
2525 treatment of chronic liver disease, and he was recognized
2626 internationally for his scientific brilliance; he served as
2727 director of the Clayton Foundation Biochemical Institute for
2828 more than 30 years; and
2929 WHEREAS, Dr. Reed's numerous honors for his work include
3030 the Eli Lilly and Company Award in Biological Chemistry from
3131 the American Chemical Society and the Merck Award from the
3232 American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; he
3333 was elected to membership in the National Academy of
3434 Sciences, and he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy
3535 of Arts and Sciences; and
3636 WHEREAS, He was a man of strength, wisdom, and integrity
3737 who gave unselfishly to others; his generous spirit and his
3838 enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be
3939 forgotten; and
4040 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
4141 and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by all
4242 who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4444 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4545 family of Lester J. Reed; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4747 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4848 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4949 memory of Lester J. Reed.
