5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of noted chemist and researcher Lester J. |
---|
7 | 7 | | Reed, who died January 14, 2015, at the age of 90; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Lester Reed was born on January 3, 1925, in New |
---|
9 | 9 | | Orleans, Louisiana; he was drawn to a life in science at an early |
---|
10 | 10 | | age after his sister gave him a chemistry set, and he went on to |
---|
11 | 11 | | earn a bachelor's degree from Tulane University and a doctoral |
---|
12 | 12 | | degree in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois at |
---|
13 | 13 | | Urbana-Champaign; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, He met Janet Gruschow while pursuing postdoctoral |
---|
15 | 15 | | studies at the Cornell University Medical School, and they |
---|
16 | 16 | | married on August 7, 1948; they raised four children together and |
---|
17 | 17 | | were blessed with two grandchildren; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Reed joined the chemistry faculty at The |
---|
19 | 19 | | University of Texas at Austin in 1948; over the course of his |
---|
20 | 20 | | distinguished 53-year career at the university, he served as a |
---|
21 | 21 | | mentor to countless scientists and scholars around the world, and |
---|
22 | 22 | | in 1984, he was named the Ashbel Smith Professor; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, His groundbreaking work and publications on the |
---|
24 | 24 | | first isolation of lipoic acid had a profound impact on the |
---|
25 | 25 | | treatment of chronic liver disease, and he was recognized |
---|
26 | 26 | | internationally for his scientific brilliance; he served as |
---|
27 | 27 | | director of the Clayton Foundation Biochemical Institute for |
---|
28 | 28 | | more than 30 years; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Reed's numerous honors for his work include |
---|
30 | 30 | | the Eli Lilly and Company Award in Biological Chemistry from |
---|
31 | 31 | | the American Chemical Society and the Merck Award from the |
---|
32 | 32 | | American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; he |
---|
33 | 33 | | was elected to membership in the National Academy of |
---|
34 | 34 | | Sciences, and he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy |
---|
35 | 35 | | of Arts and Sciences; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, He was a man of strength, wisdom, and integrity |
---|
37 | 37 | | who gave unselfishly to others; his generous spirit and his |
---|
38 | 38 | | enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be |
---|
39 | 39 | | forgotten; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, |
---|
41 | 41 | | and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by all |
---|
42 | 42 | | who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
45 | 45 | | family of Lester J. Reed; and, be it further |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
47 | 47 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
48 | 48 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
49 | 49 | | memory of Lester J. Reed. |
