| 10 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 11 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 51, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | amended by adding Section 51.9721 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Sec. 51.9721. ARCHITECTURE DEGREE PROGRAM INSTRUCTION IN |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | ACCESSIBLE DESIGN. (a) In this section, "institution of higher |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | education" has the meaning assigned by Section 61.003. |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | (b) The governing board of each institution of higher |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | education that offers an undergraduate or graduate degree program |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | in architecture shall include in the required curriculum for that |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | degree program instruction regarding the requirements of the 2010 |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design or |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | any successor standards that address accessible design of buildings |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | or other facilities and are promulgated under the Americans with |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Disabilities Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. Section 12101 et seq.). |

| 24 | 24 | | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | to an undergraduate or graduate degree program in architecture |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | offered by a public institution of higher education during an |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | academic period that begins on or after the effective date of this |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Act. |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
