66 AN ACT
77 relating to instruction in accessible design in the curriculum for
88 an architecture degree program offered by a public institution of
99 higher education.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 51, Education Code, is
1212 amended by adding Section 51.9721 to read as follows:
1313 Sec. 51.9721. ARCHITECTURE DEGREE PROGRAM INSTRUCTION IN
1414 ACCESSIBLE DESIGN. (a) In this section, "institution of higher
1515 education" has the meaning assigned by Section 61.003.
1616 (b) The governing board of each institution of higher
1717 education that offers an undergraduate or graduate degree program
1818 in architecture shall include in the required curriculum for that
1919 degree program instruction regarding the requirements of the 2010
2020 Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design or
2121 any successor standards that address accessible design of buildings
2222 or other facilities and are promulgated under the Americans with
2323 Disabilities Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. Section 12101 et seq.).
2424 SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only
2525 to an undergraduate or graduate degree program in architecture
2626 offered by a public institution of higher education during an
2727 academic period that begins on or after the effective date of this
2828 Act.
2929 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3030 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3131 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3232 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3333 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
