 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 AN ACT
 relating to instruction in accessible design in the curriculum for
 an architecture degree program offered by a public institution of
 higher education.
 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 SECTION 1.  Subchapter Z, Chapter 51, Education Code, is
 amended by adding Section 51.9721 to read as follows:
 Sec. 51.9721.  ARCHITECTURE DEGREE PROGRAM INSTRUCTION IN
 ACCESSIBLE DESIGN. (a) In this section, "institution of higher
 education" has the meaning assigned by Section 61.003.
 (b)  The governing board of each institution of higher
 education that offers an undergraduate or graduate degree program
 in architecture shall include in the required curriculum for that
 degree program instruction regarding the requirements of the 2010
 Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design or
 any successor standards that address accessible design of buildings
 or other facilities and are promulgated under the Americans with
 Disabilities Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. Section 12101 et seq.).
 SECTION 2.  The change in law made by this Act applies only
 to an undergraduate or graduate degree program in architecture
 offered by a public institution of higher education during an
 academic period that begins on or after the effective date of this
 Act.
 SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
