 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 AN ACT
 relating to the eligibility of certain entities for grants awarded
 by the criminal justice division of the governor's office.
 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 SECTION 1.  Section 772.006, Government Code, is amended by
 adding Subsection (g) to read as follows:
 (g)  The criminal justice division may not award a grant to
 the Department of Public Safety, the Texas Department of Criminal
 Justice, a police department of a municipality with a population of
 800,000 or more, or a sheriff's department of a county with a
 population of one million or more unless the department is a party
 to an agreement with the United States Secretary of Homeland
 Security and United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement
 under Section 287(g), Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C.
 Section 1357).
 SECTION 2.  The change in law made by this Act applies only
 to a grant application submitted to the criminal justice division
 of the governor's office on or after the effective date of this Act.
 A grant application submitted before the effective date of this Act
 is governed by the law in effect on the date the application was
 submitted, and that law is continued in effect for that purpose.
 SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
