A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to the waiting list for an open-enrollment charter school.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 12, Education Code, is
amended by adding Section 12.1172 to read as follows:
Sec. 12.1172. WAITING LIST FOR ADMISSION TO OPEN-ENROLLMENT
CHARTER SCHOOL. (a) An open-enrollment charter school with a
waiting list for admission must make available on its Internet
website:
(1) the school's current waiting list, with each
student on the list represented by a unique identification number
that does not reveal the student's identity; and
(2) a description of the process used to select
students from the waiting list.
(b) An open-enrollment charter school shall provide the
parent of or person standing in parental relation to a student to be
included on the waiting list with:
(1) information on how to access the publicly
available waiting list required by this section; and
(2) the student's unique identification number.
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018
school year.
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
