77 relating to the registration of certain trailers; changing a fee.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Section 502.0023(d-1), Transportation Code, is
1010 amended to read as follows:
1111 (d-1) The department shall issue a license plate for a token
1212 trailer registered under this section in the manner provided by
1313 Section 502.255 [that does not expire. The alphanumeric pattern
1414 for a license plate issued under this subsection may remain on a
1515 token trailer for as long as the registration of the token trailer
1616 is renewed or until the token trailer is removed from service or
1717 sold. The registration receipt required under Section 621.002 is
1818 not required for a vehicle that displays a license plate issued
1919 under this subsection].
2020 SECTION 2. The heading to Section 502.255, Transportation
2121 Code, is amended to read as follows:
2222 Sec. 502.255. TRUCK-TRACTOR OR COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE
2323 COMBINATION FEE; PERMANENT SEMITRAILER TOKEN FEE.
2424 SECTION 3. Sections 502.255(c), (i), and (j),
2525 Transportation Code, are amended to read as follows:
2626 (c) The fee for registration of a semitrailer used in the
2727 manner described by Subsection (a), regardless of the date the
2828 semitrailer is registered, is $15 for a registration year or $80 if
2929 the semitrailer is registered with a permanent license plate issued
3030 under Subsection (i).
3131 (i) The department shall issue a license plate for a token
3232 trailer registered under this section that does not expire or
3333 require an annual registration insignia to be valid. The license
3434 plate must include the word "Permanent." A [alphanumeric pattern
3535 for a] license plate issued under this subsection may remain on a
3636 token trailer [for as long as the registration of the token trailer
3737 is renewed or] until the token trailer is removed from service or
3838 sold, provided that the license plate must be removed if the
3939 department cancels, suspends, or revokes the registration for the
4040 token trailer as provided by law or department rule. The
4141 registration receipt required under Section 621.002 is not required
4242 for a vehicle that displays a license plate issued under this
4343 subsection.
4444 (j) A person may register a semitrailer under this section
4545 if the person:
4646 (1) applies to the department for registration;
4747 (2) provides proof of the person's eligibility to
4848 register the vehicle under this subsection as required by the
4949 department; and
5050 (3) pays the applicable [a] fee required by Subsection
5151 (c) [of $15], plus any other applicable fee under this chapter for
5252 each year the semitrailer is registered or at each registration if
5353 the semitrailer is registered under Subsection (i) [Section
5454 502.401, for each year included in the registration period].
5555 SECTION 4. The change in law made by this Act applies only
5656 in connection with the registration of a vehicle that is applied for
5757 on or after the effective date of this Act.
5858 SECTION 5. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
