| 10 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 11 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Section 21.051(b), Education Code, is amended to |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | read as follows: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | (b) Before a school district may employ a candidate for |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | certification as a teacher of record, the candidate must complete |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | at least 15 hours of field-based experience, which may occur after |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the candidate's admission to an educator preparation program or |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | during the two years preceding admission. The candidate may satisfy |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the experience requirement through serving as a substitute teacher |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | or teacher's aide for at least five school days or through other |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | experience requiring the candidate's active engagement in |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | instructional or educational activities. The experience must be |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | obtained [in which the candidate is actively engaged in |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | instructional or educational activities under supervision] at: |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (1) a public school campus accredited or approved for |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the purpose by the agency; or |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | (2) a private school recognized or approved for the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | purpose by the agency. |

| 28 | 28 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
