8 | 8 | certain inmates confined in county and municipal jails. | |
9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
10 | 10 | SECTION 1. (a) The Commission on Jail Standards shall | |
11 | 11 | conduct a study to evaluate: | |
12 | 12 | (1) the effectiveness of the screening practices used | |
13 | 13 | to identify, diagnose, and determine treatment for inmates with | |
14 | 14 | mental illness confined in county and municipal jails; | |
15 | 15 | (2) the effectiveness of mental health treatment | |
16 | 16 | provided to inmates with mental illness confined in county and | |
17 | 17 | municipal jails; and | |
18 | 18 | (3) the level of coordination between local mental | |
19 | 19 | health authorities and county and municipal jails in identifying | |
20 | 20 | and diagnosing inmates with mental illness. | |
21 | 21 | (b) Not later than January 1, 2019, the Commission on Jail | |
22 | 22 | Standards shall submit a written report to the legislature on the | |
23 | 23 | results of the study conducted under Subsection (a) of this | |
24 | 24 | section. | |
25 | 25 | SECTION 2. This Act expires September 1, 2019. | |
26 | 26 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
