| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Fischer's Meat Market in Muenster celebrated its |

| 6 | 7 | | 90th anniversary in March 2017, and this occasion provides a |

| 7 | 8 | | fitting opportunity to reflect on the rich history of this |

| 8 | 9 | | family-owned enterprise; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Established by John August Fisher and Joseph W. |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Fisher along with Walter Pulter and O. J. Huchton, the market opened |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | its doors on March 17, 1927, at a time when Muenster was benefiting |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | from the discovery of oil in the region; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Like many other businesses, the meat market |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | struggled during the Great Depression, but the reputation of its |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | German sausage continued to spread beyond Muenster, and in 1933, |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | the inventory was expanded to include groceries as well; known as |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Fisher's Super Market during this period, the shop needed more |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | space by 1962 and moved into a building that had formerly housed a |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | car dealership; in addition to gaining a larger retail store, the |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Fishers were able to construct next to the building a new, modern |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | slaughterhouse; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, In 1975, John and Joseph Fisher's sons, John C. |

| 23 | 24 | | Fisher and Francis R. "Butch" Fisher, took over the business, and in |

| 24 | 25 | | honor of their family's heritage, they remodeled the store to give |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | it a Bavarian-style appearance, a project that included the |

| 26 | 27 | | installation of a glockenspiel clock tower; they also changed the |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | name of the store to accord with the original German spelling of |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | their family's surname; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Today, the business is operated by Steven and Penny |

| 30 | 31 | | Fisher, who represent the third generation of the family to run the |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | market, and the staff has grown to 75 employees; the store's |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | offerings now encompass a wide variety of cheeses, imported beers, |

| 33 | 34 | | salsas, jams, and other goods, and much of the meat still comes from |

| 34 | 35 | | Fischer's own feedlot; all of the fresh meats are still cut and |

| 35 | 36 | | trimmed by hand; and |

| 36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Locally owned and operated businesses play a vital |

| 37 | 38 | | role in meeting the needs of Texas communities, and it is fitting |

| 38 | 39 | | that this notable establishment be recognized for its long history |

| 39 | 40 | | of valued service to area residents; now, therefore, be it |

| 40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 41 | 42 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 90th anniversary of Fischer's |

| 42 | 43 | | Meat Market and extend to Steven and Penny Fisher and their staff |
