 R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Fischer's Meat Market in Muenster celebrated its
90th anniversary in March 2017, and this occasion provides a
fitting opportunity to reflect on the rich history of this
 family-owned enterprise; and
WHEREAS, Established by John August Fisher and Joseph W.
Fisher along with Walter Pulter and O. J. Huchton, the market opened
its doors on March 17, 1927, at a time when Muenster was benefiting
from the discovery of oil in the region; and
WHEREAS, Like many other businesses, the meat market
struggled during the Great Depression, but the reputation of its
German sausage continued to spread beyond Muenster, and in 1933,
the inventory was expanded to include groceries as well; known as
Fisher's Super Market during this period, the shop needed more
space by 1962 and moved into a building that had formerly housed a
car dealership; in addition to gaining a larger retail store, the
Fishers were able to construct next to the building a new, modern
 slaughterhouse; and
WHEREAS, In 1975, John and Joseph Fisher's sons, John C.
Fisher and Francis R. "Butch" Fisher, took over the business, and in
honor of their family's heritage, they remodeled the store to give
it a Bavarian-style appearance, a project that included the
installation of a glockenspiel clock tower; they also changed the
name of the store to accord with the original German spelling of
 their family's surname; and
WHEREAS, Today, the business is operated by Steven and Penny
Fisher, who represent the third generation of the family to run the
market, and the staff has grown to 75 employees; the store's
offerings now encompass a wide variety of cheeses, imported beers,
salsas, jams, and other goods, and much of the meat still comes from
Fischer's own feedlot; all of the fresh meats are still cut and
 trimmed by hand; and
WHEREAS, Locally owned and operated businesses play a vital
role in meeting the needs of Texas communities, and it is fitting
that this notable establishment be recognized for its long history
of valued service to area residents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the 90th anniversary of Fischer's
Meat Market and extend to Steven and Penny Fisher and their staff
sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
