56 WHEREAS, Across the United States, National Correctional
67 Officers and Employees Week is being celebrated from May 7 through
78 13, 2017; and
89 WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan created National
910 Correctional Officers Week in 1984, and two years later, Congress
1011 expanded the focus to include all the employees of our nation's
1112 prisons and jails; and
1213 WHEREAS, Texas is home to some of the most qualified,
1314 resourceful, and committed correctional officers and employees in
1415 the nation; each day, they are tasked with ensuring both the safety
1516 of the public and the welfare of the inmates in their care, while
1617 simultaneously maintaining crucial operations under demanding and
1718 often dangerous conditions; and
1819 WHEREAS, Correctional officers and employees in the Lone Star
1920 State continually rise to meet the challenges associated with their
2021 profession, and this observance provides a fitting opportunity to
2122 recognize their hard work and dedication; now, therefore, be it
2223 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
2324 Legislature hereby recognize May 7-13, 2017, as National
2425 Correctional Officers and Employees Week and honor our state's
2526 correctional officers and employees for their vital contributions
2627 to their fellow citizens.
