56 WHEREAS, Karen Esperanza Garza of Brownsville Early College
67 High School is being awarded a 2017 Dell Scholarship; and
78 WHEREAS, An initiative of the Michael and Susan Dell
89 Foundation, the Dell Scholars Program awards scholarships annually
910 to up to 400 low-income students, most of whom represent the first
1011 generation in their families to attend college, and many of whom
1112 have already overcome various personal challenges in their lives;
1213 in addition to an annual $20,000 award that is renewable for six
1314 years, the program provides a laptop, tutoring, mentoring, and
1415 other resources; more than 80 percent of Dell Scholars graduate
1516 within six years, four times the national rate for low-income
1617 students; and
1718 WHEREAS, A most deserving recipient, Karen Esperanza Garza
1819 has demonstrated impressive drive and ability as she works toward
1920 her scholastic and personal goals, and she may indeed look forward
2021 to a future bright with promise; now, therefore, be it
2122 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
2223 Legislature hereby congratulate Karen Esperanza Garza on her
2324 receipt of a 2017 Dell Scholarship and extend to her sincere best
2425 wishes for continued success in all her endeavors; and, be it
