45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The Honorable Eddie Cavazos is retiring in 2017,
67 drawing to a close a distinguished career in public service and in
78 the private sector that has spanned more than half a century; and
89 WHEREAS, Mr. Cavazos received his education at Del Mar
910 College and Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and from 1960 to 1963,
1011 he served his nation in the U.S. Army; returning to civilian life,
1112 he worked for Reynolds Metals Company until 1973 and then ran his
1213 own casualty insurance and real estate brokerage business until
1314 1983; and
1415 WHEREAS, Elected to the Texas House of Representatives from
1516 Nueces County in 1983, Mr. Cavazos served for five terms, and over
1617 the course of his tenure, he was chair of the Committee on Insurance
1718 and twice chair of the Insurance Subcommittee on Budget and
1819 Oversight, and he also served as chair of the Cultural and
1920 Historical Resources Subcommittee on Budget and Oversight and as
2021 co-chair of the Committee on Higher Education in South Texas; in
2122 addition, he served for four terms on the appropriations, health
2223 and human services, and budget conference committees, and he was
2324 chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus; and
2425 WHEREAS, From 1993 to 1995, Mr. Cavazos was chair of the
2526 Texas Workforce Commission, by appointment of Governor Ann
2627 Richards; he led the complete restructuring of the agency and
2728 helped improve productivity among the commission's more than 6,000
2829 employees in over 250 locations across the state; he also led the
2930 implementation of new mobile technology allowing access to the job
3031 market from a variety of business locations; and
3132 WHEREAS, Since 1995, Mr. Cavazos has represented a variety of
3233 clients before the Texas Legislature, assisting them with outreach
3334 to their elected officials on such matters as energy,
3435 communications, windstorm insurance, health care, education,
3536 taxes, and business development; and
3637 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Cavazos has enjoyed the
3738 love and support of Diana, his wife of 52 years, as well as that of
3839 his children, Celena, Randy, and Jennifer, and his grandchildren,
3940 Alix, Matthew, Ryan, Kendra, Jacob, and Bella; and
4041 WHEREAS, Mr. Cavazos's dedication, professionalism, and
4142 commitment to service have greatly benefited his fellow Texans, and
4243 he may indeed reflect with pride on a career well spent as he
4344 embarks on the next exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore, be
4445 it
4546 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4647 Legislature hereby congratulate Eddie Cavazos on his retirement and
4748 extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4849 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4950 prepared for Mr. Cavazos as an expression of high regard by the
5051 Texas House of Representatives.
