5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Honorable Eddie Cavazos is retiring in 2017, |

6 | 7 | | drawing to a close a distinguished career in public service and in |
---|
7 | 8 | | the private sector that has spanned more than half a century; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cavazos received his education at Del Mar |
---|
9 | 10 | | College and Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and from 1960 to 1963, |
---|
10 | 11 | | he served his nation in the U.S. Army; returning to civilian life, |
---|
11 | 12 | | he worked for Reynolds Metals Company until 1973 and then ran his |
---|
12 | 13 | | own casualty insurance and real estate brokerage business until |
---|
13 | 14 | | 1983; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Elected to the Texas House of Representatives from |
---|
15 | 16 | | Nueces County in 1983, Mr. Cavazos served for five terms, and over |
---|
16 | 17 | | the course of his tenure, he was chair of the Committee on Insurance |
---|
17 | 18 | | and twice chair of the Insurance Subcommittee on Budget and |
---|
18 | 19 | | Oversight, and he also served as chair of the Cultural and |
---|
19 | 20 | | Historical Resources Subcommittee on Budget and Oversight and as |
---|
20 | 21 | | co-chair of the Committee on Higher Education in South Texas; in |
---|
21 | 22 | | addition, he served for four terms on the appropriations, health |
---|
22 | 23 | | and human services, and budget conference committees, and he was |
---|
23 | 24 | | chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, From 1993 to 1995, Mr. Cavazos was chair of the |
---|
25 | 26 | | Texas Workforce Commission, by appointment of Governor Ann |
---|
26 | 27 | | Richards; he led the complete restructuring of the agency and |
---|
27 | 28 | | helped improve productivity among the commission's more than 6,000 |
---|
28 | 29 | | employees in over 250 locations across the state; he also led the |
---|
29 | 30 | | implementation of new mobile technology allowing access to the job |
---|
30 | 31 | | market from a variety of business locations; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Since 1995, Mr. Cavazos has represented a variety of |
---|
32 | 33 | | clients before the Texas Legislature, assisting them with outreach |
---|
33 | 34 | | to their elected officials on such matters as energy, |
---|
34 | 35 | | communications, windstorm insurance, health care, education, |
---|
35 | 36 | | taxes, and business development; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Cavazos has enjoyed the |
---|
37 | 38 | | love and support of Diana, his wife of 52 years, as well as that of |
---|
38 | 39 | | his children, Celena, Randy, and Jennifer, and his grandchildren, |
---|
39 | 40 | | Alix, Matthew, Ryan, Kendra, Jacob, and Bella; and |
---|
40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cavazos's dedication, professionalism, and |
---|
41 | 42 | | commitment to service have greatly benefited his fellow Texans, and |
---|
42 | 43 | | he may indeed reflect with pride on a career well spent as he |
---|
43 | 44 | | embarks on the next exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore, be |

45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

46 | 47 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Eddie Cavazos on his retirement and |

47 | 48 | | extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |

48 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
