H.R. No. 217 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Honorable Eddie Cavazos is retiring in 2017, drawing to a close a distinguished career in public service and in the private sector that has spanned more than half a century; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cavazos received his education at Del Mar College and Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and from 1960 to 1963, he served his nation in the U.S. Army; returning to civilian life, he worked for Reynolds Metals Company until 1973 and then ran his own casualty insurance and real estate brokerage business until 1983; and WHEREAS, Elected to the Texas House of Representatives from Nueces County in 1983, Mr. Cavazos served for five terms, and over the course of his tenure, he was chair of the Committee on Insurance and twice chair of the Insurance Subcommittee on Budget and Oversight, and he also served as chair of the Cultural and Historical Resources Subcommittee on Budget and Oversight and as co-chair of the Committee on Higher Education in South Texas; in addition, he served for four terms on the appropriations, health and human services, and budget conference committees, and he was chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus; and WHEREAS, From 1993 to 1995, Mr. Cavazos was chair of the Texas Workforce Commission, by appointment of Governor Ann Richards; he led the complete restructuring of the agency and helped improve productivity among the commission's more than 6,000 employees in over 250 locations across the state; he also led the implementation of new mobile technology allowing access to the job market from a variety of business locations; and WHEREAS, Since 1995, Mr. Cavazos has represented a variety of clients before the Texas Legislature, assisting them with outreach to their elected officials on such matters as energy, communications, windstorm insurance, health care, education, taxes, and business development; and WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Cavazos has enjoyed the love and support of Diana, his wife of 52 years, as well as that of his children, Celena, Randy, and Jennifer, and his grandchildren, Alix, Matthew, Ryan, Kendra, Jacob, and Bella; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cavazos's dedication, professionalism, and commitment to service have greatly benefited his fellow Texans, and he may indeed reflect with pride on a career well spent as he embarks on the next exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Eddie Cavazos on his retirement and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Cavazos as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
