| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Mary McLeod Bethune Day Nursery in Corpus |

| 6 | 7 | | Christi is marking the 75th anniversary of its founding in 2017; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In 1942, a group of concerned area citizens, |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | including Bernice Leonard and the Reverend B. E. Joshua, came |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | together to discuss establishing a day care; the need for such a |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | facility was particularly acute in the community, where many |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | parents worked away from the home and were forced to leave younger |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | children in the care of older siblings; a small frame house was |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | purchased to serve as the new center, which was named in honor of |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Mary McLeod Bethune, a prominent African American educator and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | civic leader; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The Mary McLeod Bethune Day Nursery was incorporated |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | on February 9, 1942; donations of money and food were collected from |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | churches, clubs, and other members of the community, and volunteers |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | were recruited to look after the children; through the years, this |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | vital resource has been sustained by the generosity of numerous |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | individuals, foundations, civic organizations, corporations, and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | volunteers, and their combined efforts and support have enabled it |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | to expand its facilities while continuing to offer excellent child |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | care; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Through its presence as a safe and nurturing |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | environment for area children, the Bethune Day Nursery has helped |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | countless families pursue a better quality of life, and it is a |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | pleasure to join in celebrating another milestone in its history; |

| 30 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
