H.R. No. 2670 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Mary McLeod Bethune Day Nursery in Corpus Christi is marking the 75th anniversary of its founding in 2017; and WHEREAS, In 1942, a group of concerned area citizens, including Bernice Leonard and the Reverend B. E. Joshua, came together to discuss establishing a day care; the need for such a facility was particularly acute in the community, where many parents worked away from the home and were forced to leave younger children in the care of older siblings; a small frame house was purchased to serve as the new center, which was named in honor of Mary McLeod Bethune, a prominent African American educator and civic leader; and WHEREAS, The Mary McLeod Bethune Day Nursery was incorporated on February 9, 1942; donations of money and food were collected from churches, clubs, and other members of the community, and volunteers were recruited to look after the children; through the years, this vital resource has been sustained by the generosity of numerous individuals, foundations, civic organizations, corporations, and volunteers, and their combined efforts and support have enabled it to expand its facilities while continuing to offer excellent child care; and WHEREAS, Through its presence as a safe and nurturing environment for area children, the Bethune Day Nursery has helped countless families pursue a better quality of life, and it is a pleasure to join in celebrating another milestone in its history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Mary McLeod Bethune Day Nursery on the 75th anniversary of its founding and extend to all those affiliated with the center sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Bethune Day Nursery as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
