8 | 9 | | inspiring symbols of the struggle for liberty and the right of free |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, In 1718, Fray Antonio de Olivares established a |
---|
11 | 12 | | Franciscan mission in what is now San Antonio, and in 1744, the |
---|
12 | 13 | | cornerstone was laid for the world-famous chapel that survives to |
---|
13 | 14 | | this day; the building's use as a mission ceased around 1765, and in |
---|
14 | 15 | | 1803, it was occupied by Spanish colonial soldiers who called it "El |
---|
15 | 16 | | Alamo," after the surrounding grove of cottonwoods and in honor of |

16 | 17 | | their unit's home base in Mexico, Alamo de Parras; and |

17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, After the Mexican War of Independence, the Alamo was |
