H.R. No. 400 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders in Lubbock has been named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School; and WHEREAS, The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program was created by the U.S. Department of Education in 1982 to recognize campuses that have demonstrated overall academic excellence or made notable progress in improving outcomes among disadvantaged students; the Talkington School was one of only 279 public schools nationwide to have earned this impressive honor in 2016; and WHEREAS, Established by the Young Women's Preparatory Network in 2008, the school currently serves more than 400 students in 6th through 12th grades in the Lubbock Independent School District; ably led by principal Berta Fogerson, the school's outstanding faculty and staff work tirelessly to foster a tight-knit community and to promote high academic expectations; initiatives such as the Big Sister, Little Sister mentoring program create a comfortable, nurturing environment, while the curriculum emphasizes college readiness with a focus on Advanced Placement courses; and WHEREAS, Through their dedication and commitment to excellence, the students, teachers, and administrators of the Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders have built an impressive record of scholastic achievement, and they may take great pride in receiving the Blue Ribbon designation; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders on its selection as a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School and extend to all those associated with the institution sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
