45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Wanda Adams was named the 2017 president of the
67 Houston Independent School District Board of Education; and
78 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has served on the Houston ISD
89 Board since 2013, and she was elected president by unanimous vote;
910 and
1011 WHEREAS, A native of Houston and graduate of Kashmere High
1112 School, Ms. Adams earned a bachelor's degree in public affairs and
1213 a master's degree in public administration from Texas Southern
1314 University, where she is now a professor of political science; and
1415 WHEREAS, Over the course of her distinguished tenure in
1516 public service, Ms. Adams has contributed her time and talents to
1617 the Houston Housing Authority, the Mental Health Mental Retardation
1718 Authority of Harris County, and the Mayor's Citizens Assistance
1819 Office; moreover, she served for six years on the Houston City
1920 Council, and she was the first African American woman appointed to
2021 the Harris County Appraisal District Board of Directors; and
2122 WHEREAS, Ms. Adams has further given back to her fellow
2223 residents by volunteering her time with such organizations as the
2324 Houston Area Women's Center, YMCA, YWCA, Keep Houston Beautiful,
2425 and Meals on Wheels; she is also a proud member of the Delta Sigma
2526 Theta Sorority and a Sunday school teacher and international
2627 missionary at The Fountain of Praise church; and
2728 WHEREAS, Among her many honors, Ms. Adams received the
2829 Elected Official of the Year Award from the Houston Area
2930 Association for the Education of Young Children, and she was named
3031 one of the Top 50 Women in Houston by Houston Woman Magazine; and
3132 WHEREAS, Public education is an endeavor in which all Texans
3233 have a stake, and through her devotion to the development of our
3334 young people, Wanda Adams is helping to ensure that the future of
3435 the Lone Star State rests in capable hands; now, therefore, be it
3536 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
3637 Legislature hereby congratulate Wanda Adams on her election as
3738 president of the Houston Independent School District Board of
3839 Education and extend to her sincere best wishes for a successful
3940 tenure; and, be it further
4041 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4142 prepared for Ms. Adams as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4243 House of Representatives.
