| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Wanda Adams was named the 2017 president of the |

| 6 | 7 | | Houston Independent School District Board of Education; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has served on the Houston ISD |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | Board since 2013, and she was elected president by unanimous vote; |

|---|
| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, A native of Houston and graduate of Kashmere High |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | School, Ms. Adams earned a bachelor's degree in public affairs and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | a master's degree in public administration from Texas Southern |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | University, where she is now a professor of political science; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of her distinguished tenure in |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | public service, Ms. Adams has contributed her time and talents to |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | the Houston Housing Authority, the Mental Health Mental Retardation |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Authority of Harris County, and the Mayor's Citizens Assistance |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Office; moreover, she served for six years on the Houston City |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Council, and she was the first African American woman appointed to |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | the Harris County Appraisal District Board of Directors; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Adams has further given back to her fellow |

| 22 | 23 | | residents by volunteering her time with such organizations as the |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | Houston Area Women's Center, YMCA, YWCA, Keep Houston Beautiful, |

| 24 | 25 | | and Meals on Wheels; she is also a proud member of the Delta Sigma |

| 25 | 26 | | Theta Sorority and a Sunday school teacher and international |

| 26 | 27 | | missionary at The Fountain of Praise church; and |

| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Among her many honors, Ms. Adams received the |

| 28 | 29 | | Elected Official of the Year Award from the Houston Area |

| 29 | 30 | | Association for the Education of Young Children, and she was named |

| 30 | 31 | | one of the Top 50 Women in Houston by Houston Woman Magazine; and |

| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Public education is an endeavor in which all Texans |

| 32 | 33 | | have a stake, and through her devotion to the development of our |

| 33 | 34 | | young people, Wanda Adams is helping to ensure that the future of |

| 34 | 35 | | the Lone Star State rests in capable hands; now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
