H.R. No. 418 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Wanda Adams was named the 2017 president of the Houston Independent School District Board of Education; and WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has served on the Houston ISD Board since 2013, and she was elected president by unanimous vote; and WHEREAS, A native of Houston and graduate of Kashmere High School, Ms. Adams earned a bachelor's degree in public affairs and a master's degree in public administration from Texas Southern University, where she is now a professor of political science; and WHEREAS, Over the course of her distinguished tenure in public service, Ms. Adams has contributed her time and talents to the Houston Housing Authority, the Mental Health Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County, and the Mayor's Citizens Assistance Office; moreover, she served for six years on the Houston City Council, and she was the first African American woman appointed to the Harris County Appraisal District Board of Directors; and WHEREAS, Ms. Adams has further given back to her fellow residents by volunteering her time with such organizations as the Houston Area Women's Center, YMCA, YWCA, Keep Houston Beautiful, and Meals on Wheels; she is also a proud member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and a Sunday school teacher and international missionary at The Fountain of Praise church; and WHEREAS, Among her many honors, Ms. Adams received the Elected Official of the Year Award from the Houston Area Association for the Education of Young Children, and she was named one of the Top 50 Women in Houston by Houston Woman Magazine; and WHEREAS, Public education is an endeavor in which all Texans have a stake, and through her devotion to the development of our young people, Wanda Adams is helping to ensure that the future of the Lone Star State rests in capable hands; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Wanda Adams on her election as president of the Houston Independent School District Board of Education and extend to her sincere best wishes for a successful tenure; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Adams as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
