| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Opened in 1967, Ross is 1 of 20 middle schools in the |

| 9 | 10 | | Northside Independent School District; serving more than 1,100 |

| 10 | 11 | | students in grades six through eight, it currently benefits from |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | the able leadership of principal Lisa McConoghy, vice principal |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Faustino Ortega, academic dean Mahntie Reeves, and assistant |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | principal Richard Cardenas; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The school's namesake is former Texas governor |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | Lawrence Sullivan "Sul" Ross; born in 1838, this Civil War veteran |

| 16 | 17 | | served for two years in the Texas Senate before being elected |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | governor in 1886; during his gubernatorial tenure, the state |

| 18 | 19 | | experienced tremendous industrial, agricultural, and commercial |

| 19 | 20 | | growth, while its educational and charitable institutions |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | flourished; after leaving politics in 1891, he became president of |

| 21 | 22 | | the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, now known as |

| 22 | 23 | | Texas A&M University, and he held that position until his passing in |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | 1898; and |

| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, For the past half century, Sul Ross Middle School |

| 25 | 26 | | has given many young Texans a strong academic foundation on which to |

| 26 | 27 | | build, and it has made a lasting and positive impact in the lives of |

| 27 | 28 | | countless San Antonio residents; now, therefore, be it |

| 28 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 29 | 30 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of Sul Ross |

| 30 | 31 | | Middle School and extend to all those associated with the school |

| 31 | 32 | | sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
