 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The faculty, staff, and students of Sul Ross Middle
 School in San Antonio celebrated its 50th anniversary on February
 21, 2017; and
 WHEREAS, Opened in 1967, Ross is 1 of 20 middle schools in the
 Northside Independent School District; serving more than 1,100
 students in grades six through eight, it currently benefits from
 the able leadership of principal Lisa McConoghy, vice principal
 Faustino Ortega, academic dean Mahntie Reeves, and assistant
 principal Richard Cardenas; and
 WHEREAS, The school's namesake is former Texas governor
 Lawrence Sullivan "Sul" Ross; born in 1838, this Civil War veteran
 served for two years in the Texas Senate before being elected
 governor in 1886; during his gubernatorial tenure, the state
 experienced tremendous industrial, agricultural, and commercial
 growth, while its educational and charitable institutions
 flourished; after leaving politics in 1891, he became president of
 the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, now known as
 Texas A&M University, and he held that position until his passing in
 1898; and
 WHEREAS, For the past half century, Sul Ross Middle School
 has given many young Texans a strong academic foundation on which to
 build, and it has made a lasting and positive impact in the lives of
 countless San Antonio residents; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
 Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of Sul Ross
 Middle School and extend to all those associated with the school
 sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
