| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly |

| 6 | 7 | | cause for celebration, and Ira Beruix Scott of Houston is marking |
|---|
| 7 | 8 | | this momentous milestone in his life on March 25, 2017; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Willis in 1917, Ira Scott attended public |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | schools in his hometown and went on to attend Huston-Tillotson |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | University, working at a dairy farm to pay for his studies; the |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | farmer was so impressed by his character and aptitude that he helped |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | pay for his education; after graduation, Mr. Scott taught in the |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | segregated school in Conroe, where he met his future wife, Evelyn |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Rhoda Landix; she resided in New Orleans, so he traveled back and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | forth to court her for three years before their marriage; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Scott were blessed with two sons, Ira |

| 17 | 18 | | and Carl, and the family eventually moved to Houston; in the early |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | 1950s, Mr. Scott became vice principal of E. O. Smith Middle |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | School, and he was appointed principal in 1965; he became involved |

| 20 | 21 | | in the Houston Teachers Credit Union and served as its board |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | president; after his retirement in 1982, he continued to contribute |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | to public education as a member and eventually as president of the |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | Houston Retired Teachers Organization; always diligent, he later |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | began selling burial plots and became the top salesman in the city; |

| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, A man of deep faith, Mr. Scott has long been an |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and he donated |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | the funds for a beautiful stained-glass window; he is a loyal member |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | of Omega Psi Phi, and in 2012, he received his 75-year pin at the |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | national convention; devoted to his family, he takes great pride in |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | his grandson, Demian Lofsnes-Scott, and he shared a fulfilling |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | marriage with his wife until her passing in 2013; today, he |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | continues to live independently, and he enjoys taking excellent |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | care of the stray cats who have come to rely on him for food, |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | shelter, and veterinarian care; and |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Ira Scott has confronted all challenges with |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | courage, strength, and determination, and he has inspired others |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | through his steadfast commitment to education and hard work; in |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | sharing the wisdom and experience gained over the course of a |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | historic century, he has enriched the lives of all who are fortunate |
|---|
| 41 | 42 | | enough to know him; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Ira Beruix Scott on the joyous |

| 44 | 45 | | occasion of his 100th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes |
