H.R. No. 779 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly cause for celebration, and Ira Beruix Scott of Houston is marking this momentous milestone in his life on March 25, 2017; and WHEREAS, Born in Willis in 1917, Ira Scott attended public schools in his hometown and went on to attend Huston-Tillotson University, working at a dairy farm to pay for his studies; the farmer was so impressed by his character and aptitude that he helped pay for his education; after graduation, Mr. Scott taught in the segregated school in Conroe, where he met his future wife, Evelyn Rhoda Landix; she resided in New Orleans, so he traveled back and forth to court her for three years before their marriage; and WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Scott were blessed with two sons, Ira and Carl, and the family eventually moved to Houston; in the early 1950s, Mr. Scott became vice principal of E. O. Smith Middle School, and he was appointed principal in 1965; he became involved in the Houston Teachers Credit Union and served as its board president; after his retirement in 1982, he continued to contribute to public education as a member and eventually as president of the Houston Retired Teachers Organization; always diligent, he later began selling burial plots and became the top salesman in the city; and WHEREAS, A man of deep faith, Mr. Scott has long been an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and he donated the funds for a beautiful stained-glass window; he is a loyal member of Omega Psi Phi, and in 2012, he received his 75-year pin at the national convention; devoted to his family, he takes great pride in his grandson, Demian Lofsnes-Scott, and he shared a fulfilling marriage with his wife until her passing in 2013; today, he continues to live independently, and he enjoys taking excellent care of the stray cats who have come to rely on him for food, shelter, and veterinarian care; and WHEREAS, Ira Scott has confronted all challenges with courage, strength, and determination, and he has inspired others through his steadfast commitment to education and hard work; in sharing the wisdom and experience gained over the course of a historic century, he has enriched the lives of all who are fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Ira Beruix Scott on the joyous occasion of his 100th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Scott as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
