6 | 7 | | comfort the family and friends of Dr. Rosemarie Rivera Garza of |

7 | 8 | | Uvalde, who passed away on January 9, 2017, at the age of 61; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born on February 13, 1955, to Virgilio and Marcela |
---|
9 | 10 | | Rivera, the former Rosemarie Rivera was a native of San Teodoro on |
---|
10 | 11 | | the island of Mindoro in the Philippines; she grew up in Manila and |
---|
11 | 12 | | graduated as a registered nurse in 1976, and two years later, she |
---|
12 | 13 | | immigrated to the United States, settling first in the Rio Grande |
---|
13 | 14 | | Valley in South Texas; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In her work as a nurse, clinical educator, and |
---|
15 | 16 | | nursing instructor, Dr. Rosemarie Garza dedicated her life to the |
---|
16 | 17 | | care of others; she remained committed to her profession even while |
---|
17 | 18 | | fighting a long battle with cancer, and she later added to her two |
---|
18 | 19 | | master's degrees by completing a Ph.D. in 2014; among her many |
---|
19 | 20 | | notable achievements was the implementation of the community health |
---|
20 | 21 | | worker program at Uvalde Memorial Hospital, which she oversaw until |
---|
21 | 22 | | her death, and she also took on a leadership role in the hospital as |
---|
22 | 23 | | an intensive care unit director; and |
---|
23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Rosemarie Garza found time to give back to her |
---|
24 | 25 | | community through her volunteer work with such organizations as the |
---|
25 | 26 | | Catholic Women's Society and the St. Henry de Osso Family Project, |
---|
26 | 27 | | and she was appointed by Governor George W. Bush to the Rural Health |
---|
27 | 28 | | Advisory Board; she was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic |
---|
28 | 29 | | Church, where she served as a lector, a Eucharistic minister, and a |
---|
29 | 30 | | vocal guitarist in the choir and was deeply loved by her fellow |
---|
30 | 31 | | congregants; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Above all else, Dr. Rosemarie Garza was devoted to |
---|
32 | 33 | | her family, including her husband, Dr. R. Steve Garza, whom she |
---|
33 | 34 | | married in 1981, and their two daughters, Kimberly Rose and Lindsay |
---|
34 | 35 | | Marie; she also delighted in gathering for holidays and vacations |
---|
35 | 36 | | with her brothers Virgilio Jr. and Joel and sisters Dorothy, |

36 | 37 | | Leslie, and Maria, as well as her countless nieces, nephews, and |

37 | 38 | | in-laws; and |
---|
38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, A caring and gracious woman, Dr. Rosemarie Garza |

39 | 40 | | will be greatly missed, and she leaves behind a legacy that will |

40 | 41 | | forever be treasured by all those who shared in her love and |

41 | 42 | | affection; now, therefore, be it |

42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Rosemarie |

44 | 45 | | Rivera Garza and extend heartfelt sympathy to all who mourn her |
