45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived may help
67 comfort the family and friends of Dr. Rosemarie Rivera Garza of
78 Uvalde, who passed away on January 9, 2017, at the age of 61; and
89 WHEREAS, Born on February 13, 1955, to Virgilio and Marcela
910 Rivera, the former Rosemarie Rivera was a native of San Teodoro on
1011 the island of Mindoro in the Philippines; she grew up in Manila and
1112 graduated as a registered nurse in 1976, and two years later, she
1213 immigrated to the United States, settling first in the Rio Grande
1314 Valley in South Texas; and
1415 WHEREAS, In her work as a nurse, clinical educator, and
1516 nursing instructor, Dr. Rosemarie Garza dedicated her life to the
1617 care of others; she remained committed to her profession even while
1718 fighting a long battle with cancer, and she later added to her two
1819 master's degrees by completing a Ph.D. in 2014; among her many
1920 notable achievements was the implementation of the community health
2021 worker program at Uvalde Memorial Hospital, which she oversaw until
2122 her death, and she also took on a leadership role in the hospital as
2223 an intensive care unit director; and
2324 WHEREAS, Dr. Rosemarie Garza found time to give back to her
2425 community through her volunteer work with such organizations as the
2526 Catholic Women's Society and the St. Henry de Osso Family Project,
2627 and she was appointed by Governor George W. Bush to the Rural Health
2728 Advisory Board; she was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic
2829 Church, where she served as a lector, a Eucharistic minister, and a
2930 vocal guitarist in the choir and was deeply loved by her fellow
3031 congregants; and
3132 WHEREAS, Above all else, Dr. Rosemarie Garza was devoted to
3233 her family, including her husband, Dr. R. Steve Garza, whom she
3334 married in 1981, and their two daughters, Kimberly Rose and Lindsay
3435 Marie; she also delighted in gathering for holidays and vacations
3536 with her brothers Virgilio Jr. and Joel and sisters Dorothy,
3637 Leslie, and Maria, as well as her countless nieces, nephews, and
3738 in-laws; and
3839 WHEREAS, A caring and gracious woman, Dr. Rosemarie Garza
3940 will be greatly missed, and she leaves behind a legacy that will
4041 forever be treasured by all those who shared in her love and
4142 affection; now, therefore, be it
4243 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4344 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Rosemarie
4445 Rivera Garza and extend heartfelt sympathy to all who mourn her
4546 passing; and, be it further
4647 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4748 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4849 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
4950 Dr. Rosemarie Rivera Garza.
