H.R. No. 848 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived may help comfort the family and friends of Dr. Rosemarie Rivera Garza of Uvalde, who passed away on January 9, 2017, at the age of 61; and WHEREAS, Born on February 13, 1955, to Virgilio and Marcela Rivera, the former Rosemarie Rivera was a native of San Teodoro on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines; she grew up in Manila and graduated as a registered nurse in 1976, and two years later, she immigrated to the United States, settling first in the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas; and WHEREAS, In her work as a nurse, clinical educator, and nursing instructor, Dr. Rosemarie Garza dedicated her life to the care of others; she remained committed to her profession even while fighting a long battle with cancer, and she later added to her two master's degrees by completing a Ph.D. in 2014; among her many notable achievements was the implementation of the community health worker program at Uvalde Memorial Hospital, which she oversaw until her death, and she also took on a leadership role in the hospital as an intensive care unit director; and WHEREAS, Dr. Rosemarie Garza found time to give back to her community through her volunteer work with such organizations as the Catholic Women's Society and the St. Henry de Osso Family Project, and she was appointed by Governor George W. Bush to the Rural Health Advisory Board; she was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she served as a lector, a Eucharistic minister, and a vocal guitarist in the choir and was deeply loved by her fellow congregants; and WHEREAS, Above all else, Dr. Rosemarie Garza was devoted to her family, including her husband, Dr. R. Steve Garza, whom she married in 1981, and their two daughters, Kimberly Rose and Lindsay Marie; she also delighted in gathering for holidays and vacations with her brothers Virgilio Jr. and Joel and sisters Dorothy, Leslie, and Maria, as well as her countless nieces, nephews, and in-laws; and WHEREAS, A caring and gracious woman, Dr. Rosemarie Garza will be greatly missed, and she leaves behind a legacy that will forever be treasured by all those who shared in her love and affection; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Rosemarie Rivera Garza and extend heartfelt sympathy to all who mourn her passing; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Rosemarie Rivera Garza.
