 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 AN ACT
 relating to requirements for mental health assignment
 certification for municipal police departments and sheriff's
 departments.
 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 SECTION 1.  Chapter 180, Local Government Code, is amended
 by adding Section 180.008 to read as follows:
 Sec. 180.008.  REQUIRED MENTAL HEALTH ASSIGNMENT
 CERTIFICATION. Each municipal police department and sheriff's
 department shall ensure that the following percentage of officers
 are certified under Section 1701.404, Occupations Code:
 (1)  at least one-fourth of the department's officers
 who:
 (A)  are engaged in traffic or highway patrol or
 otherwise detain or stop motor vehicles; or
 (B)  are primary responders who respond directly
 to calls for assistance from the public; and
 (2)  at least one-fourth of the department's officers
 who are on duty during a shift.
 SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2018.
