 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 AN ACT
 relating to a study by the State Board of Education on the
 instructional day and academic year requirements necessary to
 complete the required curriculum in public schools.
 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 SECTION 1.  (a)  The State Board of Education shall conduct
 a study to determine, for kindergarten through 12th grade, the
 length of the instructional day and of the academic year that would
 be necessary to allow for the completion of the required curriculum
 identified by the board under Section 28.002, Education Code.
 (b)  Not later than October 1, 2018, the board shall deliver
 a report containing the results of the study to the governor and the
 legislature.
 (c)  This Act expires September 1, 2019.
 SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect only if a specific
 appropriation for the implementation of the Act is provided in a
 general appropriations act of the 85th Legislature.
 SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
