55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to a government course for public school students enrolled
88 at the fifth and eighth grade levels.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by
1111 adding Subsection (c-3) to read as follows:
1212 (c-3) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules
1313 requiring students enrolled in grade levels five and eight to
1414 complete at least one semester course on government during those
1515 grade levels as part of a district's social studies curriculum. The
1616 course must include the essential knowledge and skills adopted for
1717 the government course required for high school students under
1818 Section 28.025(b-1)(4), adjusted as appropriate for age.
1919 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2018-2019
2020 school year.
2121 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2222 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2323 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2424 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2525 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
