12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The City of Rockwall has long been committed to |
---|
13 | 13 | | fostering a dynamic arts scene in its community, and live music has |
---|
14 | 14 | | played a vital role in that mission; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In 1999, the city government launched the Concert by |
---|
16 | 16 | | the Lake Series, a four-week program of free concerts on the eastern |
---|
17 | 17 | | shore of Lake Ray Hubbard; an instant triumph, the series |
---|
18 | 18 | | spotlighted regional bands, with each show averaging 175 attendees |
---|
19 | 19 | | during the inaugural season; the increasing popularity of the |
---|
20 | 20 | | series caused it to be relocated to The Harbor, a retail and |
---|
21 | 21 | | entertainment development, in 2007, and two years later, the |
---|
22 | 22 | | program was expanded to offer 24 consecutive weeks of live music |
---|
23 | 23 | | annually; since that time, the concerts have regularly drawn crowds |
---|
24 | 24 | | of more than 7,000 people; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The success of the Concert by the Lake Series led to |
---|
26 | 26 | | the formation of the city's Live Music Project, which has provided |
---|
27 | 27 | | invaluable support to area artists and brought a wide variety of |
---|
28 | 28 | | musical genres to the community; among the project's many benefits |
---|
29 | 29 | | has been the creation of several outdoor venues, including |
---|
30 | 30 | | amphitheaters at The Harbor and at Harry Myers Park and two |
---|
31 | 31 | | permanent stages in the Historic Downtown District; those locations |
---|
32 | 32 | | have hosted numerous visiting headliners as well as Rockwall Summer |
---|
33 | 33 | | Musicals, the Rockwall Philharmonic Orchestra, and the San Jacinto |
---|
34 | 34 | | Plaza Music Series, which presents over 50 free concerts each year; |

35 | 35 | | and |

36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Since 2004, the annual Rockwall Founders Day |
---|
37 | 37 | | Festival has placed special emphasis on live music by featuring |

38 | 38 | | regional groups and world-touring acts alike, including such Texas |

39 | 39 | | music legends as Robert Earl Keen, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Asleep at |
---|
40 | 40 | | the Wheel, as well as the Little River Band, the Marshall Tucker |
---|
41 | 41 | | Band, and the Charlie Daniels Band; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Through the efforts of the City of Rockwall, local |
---|
43 | 43 | | residents are now able to enjoy nearly 130 free live music |
---|
44 | 44 | | performances each year, and the town's growing reputation as an |
---|
45 | 45 | | important music hub has made it a popular destination for travelers |
---|
46 | 46 | | from across Texas and beyond; now, therefore, be it |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
48 | 48 | | hereby designate the city of Rockwall as an official Live Music |
---|
49 | 49 | | Capital of North Texas and urge that free live music continue to be |
---|
50 | 50 | | readily available to the residents and visitors of the Lone Star |
---|
51 | 51 | | State; and, be it further |
---|
52 | 52 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |
---|
53 | 53 | | 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
---|
54 | 54 | | until the 10th anniversary of its designation. |
