| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Dr. Gloria Dean Randle Scott, who has been named an |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | honoree at the Black History Luncheon being held on |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | February 17, 2017; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, This distinguished event is being hosted by the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Texas Juvenile Justice Department and the York Halfway House and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | will pay tribute to Dr. Scott for the ongoing support and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | guidance she has given to the staff at the York Halfway House and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | to the boys in their care; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Scott is a native of Houston and a graduate of |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Jack Yates High School; she earned undergraduate and graduate |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | degrees at Indiana University, where she also received her |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | doctorate in education in 1965; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In 1975, she became the first African American to |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | serve as president of the Girl Scouts of America, and under her |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | leadership, the organization redesigned its symbol to better |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | reflect its diversity; in 1976, she served as the Institutional |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Research Planning director at Texas Southern University; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Scott has also served as vice president of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Clark College and as president of Bennett College; she has |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | received numerous honors for her work in the field of education |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | and in the community, including a Star of Texas Award and an Urban |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | League Star Award; she is truly deserving of special recognition |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | for her exceptional contributions to her profession and her |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | service on behalf of others; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Gloria Dean Randle Scott on her |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | outstanding achievements and extend to her best wishes for |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | continued success in all her endeavors; and, be it further |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

| 32 | 32 | | her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
