SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 216 WHEREAS, Members of First United Methodist Church in Daingerfield gathered on September 18, 2016, to celebrate 170 years of worship in that community; and WHEREAS, By 1846, a 40-acre site near Daingerfield was known as the Methodist campground; in 1856, a Methodist church was organized by Molly Beaver, a longtime Daingerfield school teacher, and that same year, members of the congregation erected a church building; that sanctuary and two others over the years were destroyed by fire, but the parishioners of First United Methodist surmounted each crisis; today, as throughout its history, the church plays a vital role in the community, providing its members with myriad opportunities for spiritual growth, fellowship, and outreach; and WHEREAS, From its inception, First United Methodist has benefited from the able leadership of many dedicated ministers, and that tradition of service is now continued by Pastor Dan Gilliam, who assumed the pulpit there in 2010; and WHEREAS, For well over a century and a half, Daingerfield residents have found in First United Methodist Church a caring, supportive community, one that stands with them in times of joy and sorrow, that helps them put their faith into practice, and that enriches immeasurably their life's journey; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commemorate 170 years of Methodist worship in Daingerfield and extend to the members of First United Methodist Church sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
