44 Cecil Ira Hollingshead
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of Cecil
66 Ira Hollingshead of Marshall, who passed away on December 11,
77 2016, at the age of 96; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Mont Belvieu on April 10, 1920, Cecil
99 Hollingshead was the son of Henry and Barsa Hollingshead; he
1010 joined the United States Navy in 1938 and was stationed at Pearl
1111 Harbor; when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941, he began
1212 handing out machine guns, and with his fellow sailors, he
1313 succeeded in bringing down two enemy aircraft; he subsequently
1414 helped seize Pacific islands for the Allied forces with a
1515 squadron of seagoing bombers; highly decorated, he earned the
1616 American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal,
1717 Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II
1818 Victory Medal, and, in 1991, the commemorative Pearl Harbor
1919 Medal; and
2020 WHEREAS, Mr. Hollingshead married the love of his life, the
2121 former Beatrice Ruth Schmitz, on October 5, 1945, and they became
2222 the parents of four children, James, Paul, Daniel, and Cecilia;
2323 through the years, Mr. Hollingshead knew the joy of welcoming
2424 into his family 10 grandchildren, Kimberly, Adrienne, Tiffannee,
2525 Jared, Jonathon, Harold, Joshua, Jennifer, Stormy, and Holly, as
2626 well as 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren;
2727 he and his wife shared a fulfilling marriage of 66 years before
2828 her death; and
2929 WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Hollingshead completed his
3030 bachelor's degree in mechanical and electrical engineering at
3131 the University of Houston; he performed design work for the B-52
3232 bomber while employed by Boeing in Seattle, and in 1956, he
3333 relocated to Marshall and embarked on a career with Thiokol that
3434 would span nearly three decades; following his retirement, he
3535 continued to work as a cattle rancher and custom hay baler; and
3636 WHEREAS, Mr. Hollingshead was a devout Catholic, and he
3737 served the Knights of Columbus Marshall Council for 57 years; as
3838 a nonagenarian, he spent many happy days camping, golfing, and
3939 fishing, and shortly before his death, he traveled to Pearl
4040 Harbor to participate in the 75th anniversary observance; and
4141 WHEREAS, Cecil Hollingshead lived a rich and purposeful
4242 life devoted to his family, his faith, and his country, and he
4343 leaves behind a legacy that will long be treasured by all those
4444 who held him dear; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4646 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Cecil Ira
4747 Hollingshead and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his
4848 passing; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5050 his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
5151 so in memory of Cecil Hollingshead.
