44 Bette-Jo Simpson Buhler
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Bette-Jo Simpson Buhler, who died
77 January 9, 2017, at the age of 95; and
88 WHEREAS, Bette-Jo Simpson was born on May 2, 1921, in
99 Olympia, Washington, to Blanche Taylor and Jess Ray Simpson; she
1010 graduated from the Annie Wright School in Tacoma and from the
1111 University of Washington; and
1212 WHEREAS, She married the late Frank Sibley Buhler Jr. on
1313 July 7, 1942, and the couple moved to Victoria, Texas, in 1948;
1414 she was blessed with five children, 13 grandchildren, and 17
1515 great-grandchildren; and
1616 WHEREAS, Mrs. Buhler played a major role in building the
1717 Republican Party in Texas; she was instrumental in helping John
1818 Tower become the first Republican from Texas to be elected a
1919 United States senator, and she was a founding member of the
2020 Associated Republicans of Texas; she served as cochair of the
2121 Texas Republican Party and was named the 2001 Republican of the
2222 Year by the National Republican Congressional Committee; and
2323 WHEREAS, She was also active in a wide range of community
2424 and philanthropic organizations; she was a sustaining member of
2525 the Victoria Junior League, and she helped establish Trinity
2626 Episcopal School and served as chair of the board of the Victoria
2727 Youth Activity Committee; and
2828 WHEREAS, She helped to organize the Gulf Bend Center and
2929 was actively involved with the Victoria Symphony, the Lionel
3030 Hampton International Jazz Festival, and the Texas State
3131 University System Foundation; and
3232 WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she
3333 gave unselfishly to others, and her generous spirit, her wise
3434 counsel, and her enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest
3535 will not be forgotten; and
3636 WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother,
3737 and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
3838 her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4040 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4141 family of Bette-Jo Simpson Buhler; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4343 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4444 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4545 memory of Bette-Jo Simpson Buhler.
