5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Bette-Jo Simpson Buhler, who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | January 9, 2017, at the age of 95; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Bette-Jo Simpson was born on May 2, 1921, in |
---|
9 | 9 | | Olympia, Washington, to Blanche Taylor and Jess Ray Simpson; she |
---|
10 | 10 | | graduated from the Annie Wright School in Tacoma and from the |
---|
11 | 11 | | University of Washington; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, She married the late Frank Sibley Buhler Jr. on |
---|
13 | 13 | | July 7, 1942, and the couple moved to Victoria, Texas, in 1948; |
---|
14 | 14 | | she was blessed with five children, 13 grandchildren, and 17 |
---|
15 | 15 | | great-grandchildren; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Buhler played a major role in building the |
---|
17 | 17 | | Republican Party in Texas; she was instrumental in helping John |
---|
18 | 18 | | Tower become the first Republican from Texas to be elected a |
---|
19 | 19 | | United States senator, and she was a founding member of the |
---|
20 | 20 | | Associated Republicans of Texas; she served as cochair of the |
---|
21 | 21 | | Texas Republican Party and was named the 2001 Republican of the |
---|
22 | 22 | | Year by the National Republican Congressional Committee; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, She was also active in a wide range of community |
---|
24 | 24 | | and philanthropic organizations; she was a sustaining member of |
---|
25 | 25 | | the Victoria Junior League, and she helped establish Trinity |
---|
26 | 26 | | Episcopal School and served as chair of the board of the Victoria |
---|
27 | 27 | | Youth Activity Committee; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, She helped to organize the Gulf Bend Center and |
---|
29 | 29 | | was actively involved with the Victoria Symphony, the Lionel |
---|
30 | 30 | | Hampton International Jazz Festival, and the Texas State |
---|
31 | 31 | | University System Foundation; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she |
---|
33 | 33 | | gave unselfishly to others, and her generous spirit, her wise |
---|
34 | 34 | | counsel, and her enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest |
---|
35 | 35 | | will not be forgotten; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, |
---|
37 | 37 | | and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by |
---|
38 | 38 | | her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
41 | 41 | | family of Bette-Jo Simpson Buhler; and, be it further |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
43 | 43 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |

45 | 45 | | memory of Bette-Jo Simpson Buhler. |
