| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the National Black Law Students Association on the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | occasion of its 49th Annual Convention, which is taking place |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | March 7 through 12, 2017, in Houston; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The National Black Law Students Association was |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | founded in 1968 to articulate the needs and goals of black law |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | students and to increase the number of culturally responsible |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | black lawyers who impact the community; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, For nearly half a century, the association has |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | supported the academic and social advancement of black law |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | students and lawyers who have then gone on to make a significant |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | difference in communities around the world; today, the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | association has nearly 6,000 members, students, and alumni in 200 |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | local chapters throughout the United States, and there are |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | affiliate chapters in Canada, South Africa, Nigeria, and the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Caribbean; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, This year, the National Black Law Students |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Association is prioritizing advocacy around issues of racial |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | justice and calling for a renewed commitment to reform the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | criminal justice system; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The 49th Annual Convention of the National Black |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Law Students Association will bring together more than 500 law |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | students who will conduct the annual business sessions, compete |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | in mock trial and negotiation competitions, and further develop |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the skills they need to serve as effective advocates for their |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | future clients and communities; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby commend all associated with the National |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Black Law Students Association for promoting the highest ideals |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | of justice in Texas and around the nation and extend to all best |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | wishes for a rewarding 49th Annual Convention; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | the association as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
