SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 342 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the National Black Law Students Association on the occasion of its 49th Annual Convention, which is taking place March 7 through 12, 2017, in Houston; and WHEREAS, The National Black Law Students Association was founded in 1968 to articulate the needs and goals of black law students and to increase the number of culturally responsible black lawyers who impact the community; and WHEREAS, For nearly half a century, the association has supported the academic and social advancement of black law students and lawyers who have then gone on to make a significant difference in communities around the world; today, the association has nearly 6,000 members, students, and alumni in 200 local chapters throughout the United States, and there are affiliate chapters in Canada, South Africa, Nigeria, and the Caribbean; and WHEREAS, This year, the National Black Law Students Association is prioritizing advocacy around issues of racial justice and calling for a renewed commitment to reform the criminal justice system; and WHEREAS, The 49th Annual Convention of the National Black Law Students Association will bring together more than 500 law students who will conduct the annual business sessions, compete in mock trial and negotiation competitions, and further develop the skills they need to serve as effective advocates for their future clients and communities; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend all associated with the National Black Law Students Association for promoting the highest ideals of justice in Texas and around the nation and extend to all best wishes for a rewarding 49th Annual Convention; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the association as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
